The days are slowly getting shorter and the temperature is dropping. Autumn is in full swing and the temperature is still pleasant outside. So this is the perfect time to winterise the garden. Look after your lawn, prune and take good care of your garden furniture. This way, you will enjoy your own garden this autumn and next year.

Take care of your lawn
October is the last month of lawn mowing. Set your cutting height slightly higher than normal, about 5 centimetres. This is because longer grass is stronger and can handle low sunlight better. Then clean the mower and put it in the garage, so it will be ready come spring.

Fertilise grass preferably in autumn. This improves soil quality and creates a nice deep-rooted, dense turf. Also make sure to rake the leaves from the lawn regularly. This helps the lawn get enough air and light and prevents moss growth.

Prune where necessary
Autumn cleaning also includes pruning. Do you have a beech hedge, yew or boxwood? Prune them as desired and neatly trim all outgrowth. This will ensure that the hedge has enough room to grow in the new year.

Move your plants
Do you have plants in the garden that have grown too big? Or would you like to move a plant to another place? Autumn is the perfect time to move these plants. This is because the plants enter a dormant period, making them easy to repot. Do this in the early morning or evening, as this is when there is little or no sap flow.

Take good care of your furniture
Of course, you want to enjoy your garden furniture for as long as possible. That’s why it’s important to properly protect furniture from the various weather conditions. Cover your furniture with moisture-repellent rugs, for example, or store your furniture in the shed. Wooden furniture can be impregnated. This prevents moisture from soaking into the wood, making it last longer.

Give your veranda a maintenance check
It is wonderful to enjoy the beautiful autumn garden under your veranda. You can see the garden changing into the most beautiful autumn colours. All the while, you yourself sit comfortably warm behind the glass sliding doors of your veranda.

To enjoy the veranda for as long as possible, annual maintenance is recommended. Remove all leaves from the gutter and clean the veranda with a simple soak with non-degreasing soap. To clean the roof, you can use an extendable chamois. You can read more useful tips in our blog 'cleaning your aluminium veranda in 4 steps'.

Help birds get through autumn and winter

The colder days are coming, and the birds could use some help during this time. Hang cute birdhouses and clean old ones. Birds are often looking for a safe and sheltered place in winter. Every birdhouse is more than welcome. Furthermore, provide some bird feed in your garden. A lovely extra for the birds and you get to enjoy their company in the garden.
