There are several ways to add water to the garden. Think of a pond or water ornament, for example. “Water brings life and is therefore definitely recommended,” says Jeroen Soontiëns, owner of Soontiëns Hoveniers & Tuincentrum. “You can do something with water in any garden, no matter its size.”
A living pond
A popular way to add water to the garden is by creating a pond. With a pond, there is always something to do. It attracts many species of animals such as: frogs, salamanders, birds and damselflies. Of course, you can also choose to put fish in the pond yourself.
You can make a pond in different ways. It is always recommended to make the pond at least 70 to 80cm deep at its deepest point to keep it free from frost. This way, all plants and fish will survive the winter well.
Keeping your pond beautiful requires some maintenance. This is because algae can develop in the water and you need to actively fight it yourself. It is best to grow oxygenated plants in the water. These plants purify the water themselves. Here, it is important to prune these plants in time.
A luxury water ornament
A water ornament is a beautifully designed water feature that water flows over or out of. A nice added benefit is that it brings life to your garden. Birds like to use the water for bathing or as drinking water. “A water ornament is a valuable addition to your garden. It has a luxurious look and the splashing water makes for a wonderfully soothing sound,” Jeroen explains.
A water ornament is suitable for any garden. In fact, the smallest ornaments take up only 1 m2 of space. Of course, you can also choose to place a larger water ornament in your garden. This does mean you need to have a power connection in your garden. This is because the water is pumped around by means of an electric pump. As the water continues to flow, it stays clean and therefore requires little maintenance. All you need to do is refill the water basin in hot weather. Make sure you keep the water level right and regularly top up the evaporated water.
Make smart use of rainwater
A creative way to create water in the garden is to make clever use of rainwater. You can do this by constructing a wadi. A wadi is a temporary storage for rainwater. This then allows the water to slowly soak into the ground. This method makes the rainwater visible, allowing you to see exactly how much rainwater has fallen. You get this water for free, so it's actually a waste not to take advantage of this.
