Who: Jolanda, Peter and son Mees

Where: Oirschot

What: Veranda with sun shading and glass sliding doors & carport

A recently remodelled home and a spacious south-facing garden with lots of greenery; Jolanda lives with her husband Peter and son Mees in a green environment they enjoy every day. A few years ago, the couple had a veranda with glass sliding doors installed, and sun shading was recently added as well. The idea? Creating a multifunctional space where the unobstructed view of the garden can be enjoyed all year round. Jolanda explains:

“In the afternoon around four o'clock, I sometimes lie down on the sofa under the veranda and the low sun reflects exactly into my eyes. Then what I do is only close the second lane, so I don't suffer from the sun, but still enjoy the warmth.”

“We regularly sit down with family or friends for dinner here. It’s great for when we do table grilling, for example; open the sliding doors a bit and the smell doesn't linger in your home. We also like to have a cosy Easter brunch – when it is still just too cold to sit in the garden – under our veranda.”

“We not only have a veranda, but also a carport. Great for getting in and out of the car dry when I go shopping.”

“Even in winter, I open the patio doors to the veranda. Once the sun hits the veranda, the space warms up wonderfully. Moreover, with the glass sliding doors closed, it does not get cold in my house. As an intermediate space, the veranda has an insulating effect.”

Do you ever have parties under your veranda?

“Yes, we do like a party at times. Once a year, we go all out with a big party and barbecue. Then the party lights come on and we put down the sun shading. It makes the space just a little more intimate and atmospheric. Incidentally, the glass sliding doors also stop a lot of noise, which is great! By the way, the veranda is also great for children's parties: put up a big table, fries and lemonade and the kids will have a great time.”

Why did you opt for sun shading?

“With a glass roof and sunlight on your veranda, it can get hot. As such, sun shading was a logical addition to lower the temperature under the veranda. But it has proven to be very useful in other seasons as well. Basically, it works like this for me: in winter we have the sun shading up, in summer we have it down, and in spring and autumn, I play around with the lanes. Whatever suits me at the time: having the sun shine in, or creating shade where I want it.”

Do you use your veranda throughout all seasons?

“Absolutely. Definitely in spring and summer with the glass sliding doors and the sun on your face, but we also enjoy the cosy space in autumn and winter. We enjoy sitting under the veranda when it rains or thunders. It is quite an experience to see and hear the raindrops falling on the glass roof. In winter, it is also useful to put the plants under the veranda to protect them from frost.”
